Master's program

Available topics will be advertised on the website of the master's programme specialisation in Development and Education in mid-January (for the summer semester) or June (for the winter semester). 

If you are interested in an advertised master's thesis topic, you can apply using our application form for master's theses. Please briefly state your motivation, previous experience in scientific work and in the specific topic area and upload your current collective reference and CV.

Special consideration will be given to students who fulfill the following criteria:

• Specialized in “Development and Education”
• Completion or current enrollment in the seminars “Theory and Empirical Research I” and “Theory and Empirical Research 2” from the compulsory Module B2.3 (Development and Education)
• Sound knowledge of scientific and statistical methods, including corresponding software
• Agreement with a supervisor (Ass.- Prof. Dr. Marko Lüftenegger, Univ. Prof. Dr. Barbara Schober, Univ. Prof. Dr. Thomas Götz, Univ. Prof. Dr. Dr. Christiane Spiel) 

Most topics are provided by the supervisor, as this usually allows a good integration of your work into current research topics. But you can also submit your own proposal for a research topic via email to bild.psychologie[at]univie.ac.atby the deadline of the first application phase (August 31 or January 31, maximum 5-page proposal; topic within the main research areas of our research group – see website; content: topic, state of current research, formulation of concrete research questions derived from the literature, research design, potential sample, literature). We will then determine whether we would be able to supervise the proposed thesis.

You will receive feedback on your application by the end of February (summer semester) or September (winter semester) at the latest. The following steps are necessary after the confirmation of supervision:

• Find out about the formal steps of the master’s thesis and the required forms and documents via the Faculty Website / Student Services Center (SSC).
• Begin participating in your supervisor‘s Master’s Thesis Seminar. General information on the master’s thesis and advising procedure can be found here: Guidelines on Writing Your Master’s Thesis.
• Complete your thesis proposal and hand it in to your supervisor.

In consultation with the supervisor, the following steps must be taken:

1. Registration of the master’s thesis topic
   1. Fill out the form “Registration of Master’s Thesis Topic and Supervisor” and give it to your supervisor to sign, submit it to the Student Services Center (see Studies Services Center)
2. Attend the Master’s Thesis Seminar and work on the master thesis topic
   1. Present your research plan and data analysis in the Master’s Thesis Seminar.
3. Finalization of the master’s thesis
   1. Submit an unbound initial version of your master’s thesis to your supervisor (see Studies Service Center)
   2. Feedback on the master’s thesis by your supervisor (Time for review: ca. 4 weeks)
   3. Submit the final version of your thesis to the SSC; before uploading, it must be clarified with the supervisor whether the thesis will be rated positively.

1. Clarify the current procedure for submitting the master’s thesis as well as the required forms and documents via the Student Services Center.
2. The Student Service Center will forward one copy of your master’s thesis to your supervisor for review. Registration for the final master’s examination can only be processed once your supervisor’s report has been received.
3. In addition to submitting the master’s thesis and in agreement with your supervisor: Submit the final thesis in printed and bound form (e.g. with spiral binding) to your supervisor as well as the following data on a USB stick:
   • PDF document and source-file (e.g. Word-File or LaTeX- File) of your final thesis
   • For empirical theses: the collected data and analyses
   • If Unipark was used: complete back-up with data and codebook
   • Word or PDF- document with your name and a current email address (not your Unet-email address)
