Curriculum Vitae - Short Version

Christiane Spiel is Professor of Educational Psychology and Evaluation, Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology, Faculty of Psychology, University of Vienna

Christiane Spiel studied mathematics, history and psychology. After positions at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin and the Karl Franzens University in Graz, she was appointed to the founding professorship of Educational Psychology and Evaluation at the University of Vienna in 2000. From 2004 to 2006, she established the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Vienna as founding dean. From 2006 to 2016, she was the head of the Department of Applied Psychology: Work, Education, Economics. Christiane Spiel has held and continues to hold a variety of positions in the scientific community and at the science-society interface. Among others, she was President of the Austrian Psychological Society, Chair of the Board of DeGEval - Society for Evaluation, President of the European Society for Developmental Psychology, Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Austrian Research Foundation, Member of the Board of Directors of the Global Implementation Initiative, member of the "Conseil scientifique" of the Luxembourg Ministry of Education, member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the funding initiative "Competence Modeling and Measurement in the Tertiary Education Sector" of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and member of the University Council of Leibniz Universität Hannover. Currently, she is, among others, President of the Scientific Advisory Board for Vocational Education Research of the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, Chairwoman of the Research and Science Council Carinthia, Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute of the Federation for Quality Assurance in the Austrian School System (IQS), Deputy Chairwoman of the University Council of the Bergisch University Hannover. Chairwoman of the University Council of the University of Wuppertal, Vice-Chairwoman of the Quality Assurance Council for Pedagogical Education New and of the Austrian Association of University Professors, Vice-President of the Austrian Society for Criminal Law and Criminology, and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Eco-Social Forum. Furthermore, she is co-editor of several international scientific journals as well as member of various editorial boards of international journals and member of various advisory boards of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research.

Together with her colleagues, Christiane Spiel founded Educational Psychology as a scientific discipline. Her specific research interests in Educational Psychology are in the areas of lifelong learning (keywords: self-organization, educational motivation, learning with digital media), violence prevention (keywords: bullying and cyberbullying), integration in multicultural schools and gender stereotypes in educational socialization. Furthermore, she is engaged in evaluation research and conducts evaluations in the field of education together with her colleagues. Christiane Spiel's studies have a special focus on prevention, intervention and implementation research. In order to implement her research topics, she has acquired and managed more than 40 third-party funded projects. One of her major concerns is the transfer of scientific findings with the goal of an "evidence based policy and practice". She has published widely on this topic and is also actively involved. For example, she was Chair of the Education Chapter of the International Panel on Social Progress. Currently, she is also leading the strategic project Third Mission of the University of Vienna - Transfer and Knowledge Exchange with Society.

Christiane Spiel's achievements have been recognized by many awards. Examples include the Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria, the Cross of Honor of the Republic of Austria for Science and Art, 1st Class, the Science Prize for Humanities and Social Sciences of the City of Vienna, the Franz Emanuel Weinert Prize of the German Society for Psychology for outstanding research and its transfer to society, the Medal of Honor of Leibniz University Hannover, and the Science Prize of the Margaretha Lupac Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy of the Austrian Parliament. Christiane Spiel has also received awards for innovative teaching, for mentoring, and for university management, and has been named a Fellow by the Association of Psychological Science and an Honorary Member by the Austrian Society of Psychology.
